4.5 LPA means a cost to company of ₹4,50,000 a year, or ₹37,500 a month. That second number is the one most people quote, but it is not what your bank account sees. Your employer keeps part of the CTC for its own PF contribution and gratuity, and your own PF, professional tax and any income tax come out before salary is credited. On a standard structure, a 4.5 LPA package pays roughly ₹31,898 a month in hand in FY 2026-27.

I have assumed a typical post-Labour-Code salary structure: half the CTC as basic pay, PF of 12% on basic from both you and the employer, a 4.81% gratuity provision, ₹200 a month of professional tax, and the FY 2026-27 new tax regime (Budget 2026 did not change the slabs). If your offer letter is different, the calculator in the sidebar lets you change these.

Where every rupee of 4.5 LPA goes

Here is the 4.5 LPA package laid out the way it would appear if your HR team explained it line by line, with both yearly and monthly amounts so you can compare it directly with an offer letter or a payslip.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (4.5 LPA)₹4,50,000₹37,500
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹27,000₹2,250
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹10,823₹902
Gross salary₹4,12,178₹34,348
of which Basic (50% of CTC)₹2,25,000₹18,750
of which HRA (40% of basic)₹90,000₹7,500
  of which Special allowance₹97,178₹8,098
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹27,000₹2,250
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹0₹0
In-hand salary₹3,82,778₹31,898

In plain terms, 85.1% of your CTC is spendable cash. Another 12.0% is saved for you in EPF (₹4,500 a month, earning 8.25%), and 2.4% is the gratuity provision you collect after five years with the employer. Only professional tax are true costs.

Tax on a 4.5 LPA salary in FY 2026-27

Under the new regime the only deduction a salaried person gets is the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Gross salary of ₹4,12,178 minus ₹75,000 gives a taxable income of ₹3,37,178. Employer PF and gratuity are not taxed, and professional tax is not deductible in the new regime.

Below the ₹4 lakh exemption

Your taxable income of ₹3,37,178 is under ₹4 lakh, the point where the first tax slab starts, so there is no slab tax at all and the rebate is not even needed.

Do you need to file an ITR on 4.5 LPA?

Not compulsorily. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹3,37,178, below the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit, so the law does not require you to file. I would still file a nil return each year. It costs nothing on the income tax portal, it is the only way to get back any TDS deducted by mistake, and banks treat a few years of ITRs as proof of income when you apply for a loan or credit card.

How the PF ceiling changes 4.5 LPA take-home

One question to ask before you accept a 4.5 LPA offer: is PF calculated on your full basic of ₹18,750 a month, or on the ₹15,000 statutory ceiling? The answer moves your monthly cash noticeably:

12% of full basicCapped at ₹15,000
Employee PF / month₹2,250₹1,800
Income tax / year₹0₹0
In-hand / month₹31,898₹32,798
Total EPF saving / year₹54,000₹43,200

With the cap, your take-home rises by about ₹900 a month, but you put ₹10,800 a year less into EPF. If you take the cap, consider moving at least part of that extra cash into a SIP or PPF so your long-term saving doesn't quietly shrink.

Planning your money on 4.5 LPA

If this is your first salary, a rough plan helps more than a perfect one. The 50-30-20 rule splits ₹31,898 into essentials, lifestyle and savings. Adjust the shares to your city: rent in Mumbai or Bengaluru will push 'needs' well above half.

BucketSharePer month
Needs (rent, groceries, bills, EMIs)50%₹15,949
Wants (eating out, travel, shopping)30%₹9,569
Savings and investments20%₹6,380

Keep in mind that you are already saving ₹4,500 a month through EPF before this budget even starts. Build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, about ₹95,694 to ₹1,91,389, before you lock money into long-term investments.

What lenders will look at

Lenders look at your net monthly income, not your CTC. Most banks are comfortable when all your EMIs together stay within roughly 40% to 50% of take-home pay. On ₹31,898 a month, that means total EMIs of about ₹12,759 to ₹15,949.

As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹12,759 supports a home loan of about ₹14,70,259 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.

Is 4.5 LPA a good salary in India?

4.5 LPA is a solid salary for a fresher or someone with a couple of years of experience. Engineering graduates from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges, analysts, and many mid-size company roles start around this range. A take-home of ₹31,898 covers a comfortable single life in most cities, and the new regime keeps your tax at zero.

Method and assumptions

Basic = 50% × ₹4,50,000 = ₹2,25,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹27,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹10,823
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹4,12,178
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹3,37,178 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹27,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹0 = ₹3,82,778

The working above rests on these assumptions:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.

If your company uses a different basic percentage or caps PF, put your own numbers into the CTC to in-hand calculator, or use the quick calculator on this page.

4.5 LPA in-hand salary: FAQs

What is the in-hand salary for 4.5 LPA per month?

On a standard structure, a 4.5 LPA CTC gives an in-hand salary of about ₹31,898 per month in FY 2026-27 under the new tax regime, or ₹3,82,778 a year.

How much PF is deducted on 4.5 LPA?

If PF is calculated at 12% of a basic pay of ₹18,750 a month, your own PF deduction is ₹2,250 a month and your employer adds the same amount. If your employer caps PF at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, the deduction is ₹1,800 a month instead.

Why is my in-hand lower than CTC divided by 12?

Because ₹5,602 a month goes to employer PF, gratuity, your own PF and professional tax. Most of it is saved for you in EPF and gratuity, not lost.

These figures are estimates built on the stated assumptions and FY 2026-27 tax rules. Your payslip can differ because of your employer's salary structure, state professional tax, variable pay and declared investments. Please confirm with your HR or payroll team before making financial decisions.
