70 LPA in-hand salary: what it actually pays you

"70 LPA" means an annual CTC of ₹70,00,000. Here's exactly how that number turns into a monthly bank credit, with every deduction explained in detail.

Starting point: the ₹70,00,000 CTC

At a typical 40% basic pay structure, a ₹70,00,000 annual CTC splits out like this. We've used the same assumptions as our CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator: 12% employer PF and 4.81% gratuity provisioning on basic pay, ₹200 a month professional tax, a common state slab, and the new tax regime.

ComponentAnnualMonthly
CTC₹70,00,000₹5,83,333
Basic pay (40% of CTC)₹28,00,000₹2,33,333
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹3,36,000₹28,000
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹1,34,680₹11,223
Gross salary (CTC minus employer PF minus gratuity)₹65,29,320₹5,44,110
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹3,36,000₹28,000
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime)₹17,34,643₹1,44,554
In-hand salary₹44,56,277about ₹3,71,356

How this number was calculated

  1. Start with the CTC. ₹70,00,000 is treated as the full annual cost to company.
  2. Work out basic pay. At a common 40% structure, basic pay comes to ₹28,00,000 a year, or ₹2,33,333 a month.
  3. Set aside employer contributions. Employer PF and gratuity provisioning, which never reach your bank account, are subtracted from the CTC to arrive at the gross salary of ₹5,44,110 a month.
  4. Apply deductions. Employee PF, professional tax and income tax under the new regime are subtracted from the gross salary. At this level, income tax also includes a surcharge on top of the slab amount.
  5. Arrive at the in-hand figure. What's left, about ₹3,71,356 a month, is the amount that actually lands in the bank.

How much tax applies here

At this income level, a surcharge on top of the slab tax also kicks in (10% once taxable income crosses ₹50 lakh), on top of the usual slab rates and 4% cess. Tax planning, including NPS contributions, HRA structuring, and choosing the right regime, matters a lot more at this bracket than it does lower down.

Why in-hand works out to about 64% of CTC

A noticeably smaller share of CTC reaches your bank account at this level, mainly because income tax, and at the very top surcharge, claims a bigger slice as gross salary rises.

Is 70 LPA a good salary in India?

That depends on where you live and what stage of your career you're at. A 70 LPA CTC is a strong senior level or leadership salary in most Indian cities, and puts you comfortably above average even in a metro city like Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru. At this level, the gap between CTC and in-hand is driven mostly by income tax and surcharge, so it's worth planning your investments, deductions and regime choice carefully.

What could change this number

Your actual in-hand could differ if your employer sets basic pay at a different percentage of CTC, if your state's professional tax slab is different from what's assumed here, or if part of your CTC is structured as bonus, reimbursements or a signing amount rather than fixed monthly pay. If you have significant 80C, 80D or HRA claims, also check the old tax regime on our Salary Tax Calculator, since it can occasionally beat the new regime at this income level.

Frequently asked questions

Is 70 LPA a good salary in India?

It depends heavily on your city, industry and experience level. It's a strong senior level or leadership salary in most Indian cities, and puts you well above average even in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru.

Why does income tax take a bigger share at this CTC level?

Once taxable income crosses the ₹12,00,000 rebate threshold under the new regime, income tax is charged slab by slab on the full amount, not just the portion above the threshold. That's why the effective tax bite grows noticeably at this income level compared to salaries just under ₹12 lakh.

Does surcharge apply to my salary at this income level?

Yes, once your taxable income crosses ₹50 lakh, a 10% surcharge applies on top of the regular slab tax. The surcharge rate steps up further at higher income levels, so tax planning becomes more important as your CTC grows into this range.
