13.5 LPA means a cost to company of ₹13,50,000 a year, or ₹1,12,500 a month. After the employer's PF and gratuity share, your own PF and professional tax, the take-home settles at about ₹96,094 per month for FY 2026-27. This page shows exactly how that number is built and what can push it up or down.

All figures below follow one consistent set of assumptions, so you can compare packages fairly: basic pay is 50% of CTC (the minimum share for 'wages' under the Labour Codes in force since November 2025), PF is 12% of basic on each side, gratuity is provisioned at 4.81% of basic, professional tax is ₹200 a month, and tax is worked out under the new regime for FY 2026-27.

Where every rupee of 13.5 LPA goes

Here is the 13.5 LPA package laid out the way it would appear if your HR team explained it line by line, with both yearly and monthly amounts so you can compare it directly with an offer letter or a payslip.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (13.5 LPA)₹13,50,000₹1,12,500
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹81,000₹6,750
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹32,467₹2,706
Gross salary₹12,36,533₹1,03,044
of which Basic (50% of CTC)₹6,75,000₹56,250
of which HRA (40% of basic)₹2,70,000₹22,500
  of which Special allowance₹2,91,533₹24,294
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹81,000₹6,750
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹0₹0
In-hand salary₹11,53,133₹96,094

In plain terms, 85.4% of your CTC is spendable cash. Another 12.0% is saved for you in EPF (₹13,500 a month, earning 8.25%), and 2.4% is the gratuity provision you collect after five years with the employer. Only professional tax are true costs.

Tax on a 13.5 LPA salary in FY 2026-27

The tax calculation starts from your taxable income of ₹11,61,533, which is the gross salary of ₹12,36,533 less the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Your employer's PF and gratuity contributions are outside this figure, and in the new regime there is no deduction for professional tax or your own PF.

Taxable income slabRateIncome in slabTax

₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%₹4,00,000₹20,000
₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,00010%₹3,61,533₹36,153
Tax on slabs₹56,153
Less: Section 87A rebate− ₹56,153
Add: 4% health & education cess₹0
Income tax payable₹0
Zero tax, but only up to a point

Your taxable income of ₹11,61,533 is within the ₹12 lakh limit for the Section 87A rebate, so the slab tax of ₹56,153 is fully cancelled. You still have about ₹38,468 of headroom, so a raise that adds less than that to your taxable income keeps you at zero tax.

New regime or old regime on a 13.5 LPA package

You can still choose the old regime if it suits you, but it only makes sense if your deductions are large. Below, the new regime is set against two old-regime taxpayers: one who relies only on EPF for 80C, and one who invests the full ₹1.5 lakh and buys ₹25,000 of health cover. HRA is excluded since it depends entirely on your rent.

NewOld (PF only)Old (full 80C + 80D)
Standard deduction₹75,000₹50,000₹50,000
Other deductionsNonePT + PF ₹81,000PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D

Income tax / year₹0₹1,49,177₹1,19,849
In-hand / month₹96,094₹83,663₹86,107

The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹1,19,849 more a year. With the new regime already at zero tax, there is nothing for the old regime to beat.

How the PF ceiling changes 13.5 LPA take-home

One question to ask before you accept a 13.5 LPA offer: is PF calculated on your full basic of ₹56,250 a month, or on the ₹15,000 statutory ceiling? The answer moves your monthly cash noticeably:

12% of full basicCapped at ₹15,000
Employee PF / month₹6,750₹1,800
Income tax / year₹0₹21,770
In-hand / month₹96,094₹1,04,180
Total EPF saving / year₹1,62,000₹43,200

With the cap, your take-home rises by about ₹8,086 a month, but you put ₹1,18,800 a year less into EPF. If you take the cap, consider moving at least part of that extra cash into a SIP or PPF so your long-term saving doesn't quietly shrink.

What lenders will look at

When you apply for a loan, the bank will ask for your payslips, so it is the ₹96,094 take-home that counts. A common comfort zone is to keep all EMIs, including any car or personal loans, at 40% to 50% of that figure: about ₹38,438 to ₹48,047 a month.

As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹38,438 supports a home loan of about ₹44,29,214 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.

Do you need to file an ITR on 13.5 LPA?

Yes. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹11,61,533, which is above the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit of the new regime. Filing is compulsory once income crosses that limit, even though the 87A rebate brings your actual tax to zero. The due date for salaried individuals is normally 31 July.

Filing also builds an income record that banks ask for when you apply for a home loan, a credit card or a visa.

Negotiating up from 13.5 LPA

A percentage hike on CTC does not translate one-to-one into your take-home, because PF grows with basic pay and tax can start or step up. Here is what common hikes would do to your monthly in-hand:

HikeNew CTCNew in-hand / monthChange / month
10% hike₹14,85,000₹99,416+₹3,322
20% hike₹16,20,000₹1,07,438+₹11,344
30% hike₹17,55,000₹1,15,460+₹19,366

When negotiating, compare offers on in-hand pay and on the fixed part of CTC. Variable pay, joining bonuses and ESOPs often sit inside the headline figure but are not guaranteed every month. You can try any number in the salary hike calculator.

Method and assumptions

Basic = 50% × ₹13,50,000 = ₹6,75,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹81,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹32,467
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹12,36,533
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹11,61,533 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹81,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹0 = ₹11,53,133

What this calculation assumes:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.
