16 LPA means a cost to company of ₹16,00,000 a year, or ₹1,33,333 a month. After the employer's PF and gratuity share, your own PF and professional tax and income tax, the take-home settles at about ₹1,06,250 per month for FY 2026-27. This page shows exactly how that number is built and what can push it up or down.
The numbers use the structure most employers have moved to since the new Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025: basic pay at 50% of CTC, employer and employee PF at 12% of basic each, gratuity provision at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month and the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, whose slabs Budget 2026 left unchanged.
16 LPA salary breakup (monthly and yearly)
Read this table from top to bottom. The first block is money your employer spends on you but keeps out of your salary; what remains is the gross pay printed on your payslip. The second block is what gets deducted from that gross before the ₹1,06,250 reaches your account.
| Component | Yearly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| CTC (16 LPA) | ₹16,00,000 | ₹1,33,333 |
| Employer PF (12% of basic) | ₹96,000 | ₹8,000 |
| Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | ₹38,480 | ₹3,207 |
| Gross salary | ₹14,65,520 | ₹1,22,127 |
| of which Basic (50% of CTC) | ₹8,00,000 | ₹66,667 |
| of which HRA (40% of basic) | ₹3,20,000 | ₹26,667 |
| of which Special allowance | ₹3,45,520 | ₹28,793 |
| Employee PF (12% of basic) | ₹96,000 | ₹8,000 |
| Professional tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 |
| Income tax (new regime, incl. cess) | ₹92,121 | ₹7,677 |
| In-hand salary | ₹12,74,999 | ₹1,06,250 |
Of the gap between CTC and take-home, the largest piece is PF. You and your employer together put ₹1,92,000 a year into your EPF account, where it earns 8.25% (FY 2025-26 rate) and can be withdrawn tax-free after five years of service. The gratuity provision of ₹38,480 a year is paid out only if you stay at least five years, so treat it as a loyalty bonus rather than salary.
How much income tax is deducted on 16 LPA?
Under the new regime the only deduction a salaried person gets is the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Gross salary of ₹14,65,520 minus ₹75,000 gives a taxable income of ₹13,90,520. Employer PF and gratuity are not taxed, and professional tax is not deductible in the new regime.
| Taxable income slab | Rate | Income in slab | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹0 – ₹4,00,000 | 0% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹0 |
| ₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹20,000 |
| ₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹40,000 |
| ₹12,00,000 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% | ₹1,90,520 | ₹28,578 |
| Tax on slabs | ₹88,578 | ||
| Add: 4% health & education cess | ₹3,543 | ||
| Income tax payable | ₹92,121 |
That is an effective tax rate of 5.8% of your CTC, even though your top slab is 15%. Your employer deducts it as TDS spread evenly across the year, roughly ₹7,677 a month, and adjusts it in the last quarter once your investment proofs are in.
Old vs new tax regime at 16 LPA
The new regime is the default, and you have to opt out of it with your employer if you want the old one. The comparison below uses two old-regime cases: someone whose only investment is their EPF, and someone who fills the full 80C limit and pays ₹25,000 for health insurance. HRA exemption is left out because it depends on your rent and city.
| New | Old (PF only) | Old (full 80C + 80D) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard deduction | ₹75,000 | ₹50,000 | ₹50,000 |
| Other deductions | None | PT + PF ₹96,000 | PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D |
| Taxable income | ₹13,90,520 | ₹13,17,120 | ₹12,38,120 |
| Income tax / year | ₹92,121 | ₹2,15,941 | ₹1,91,293 |
| In-hand / month | ₹1,06,250 | ₹95,932 | ₹97,986 |
The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹99,172 more a year. To make the old regime cheaper you would need about ₹5,32,731 of total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home-loan interest and so on, on top of the standard deduction and professional tax). That is realistic mainly if you pay high rent in a metro or are repaying a home loan.
Save tax with employer NPS (Section 80CCD(2))
At 16 LPA, the most effective tax move left in the new regime is corporate NPS. Section 80CCD(2) lets your employer contribute up to 14% of your basic pay to NPS, and that amount is deducted from your taxable income. Restructuring ₹1,12,000 a year of your special allowance this way changes the numbers as follows:
| Current structure | With 14% employer NPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax / year | ₹92,121 | ₹0 |
| In-hand / month | ₹1,06,250 | ₹1,04,593 |
| NPS contribution / year | ₹0 | ₹1,12,000 |
Your monthly cash goes down by ₹1,657, but you save ₹92,121 of tax a year and build ₹1,12,000 of retirement savings. The trade-off is liquidity: NPS money stays locked until 60, with only partial withdrawals before that. Note also that employer contributions to PF, NPS and superannuation together are tax-free only up to ₹7.5 lakh a year.
Is 16 LPA a good salary in India?
16 LPA is a senior-professional salary in India, typical of experienced engineers, managers and specialists. With a take-home of ₹1,06,250 a month, the real lever is no longer getting more salary but keeping more of it: tax planning, employer NPS and disciplined investing make a bigger difference at this level than small salary bumps.
What a raise from 16 LPA really adds
Planning your next appraisal or a job switch? This is what 10%, 20% and 30% more on a 16 LPA CTC would actually put in your account each month, after the extra PF and any extra tax:
| Hike | New CTC | New in-hand / month | Change / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% hike | ₹17,60,000 | ₹1,15,757 | +₹9,508 |
| 20% hike | ₹19,20,000 | ₹1,24,903 | +₹18,653 |
| 30% hike | ₹20,80,000 | ₹1,33,775 | +₹27,525 |
When negotiating, compare offers on in-hand pay and on the fixed part of CTC. Variable pay, joining bonuses and ESOPs often sit inside the headline figure but are not guaranteed every month. You can try any number in the salary hike calculator.
Do you need to file an ITR on 16 LPA?
Yes. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹13,90,520, which is above the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit of the new regime. Filing is compulsory once income crosses that limit, even though the 87A rebate brings your actual tax to zero. The due date for salaried individuals is normally 31 July.
Filing also builds an income record that banks ask for when you apply for a home loan, a credit card or a visa.

How this was calculated
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹96,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹38,480
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹14,65,520
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹13,90,520 → tax ₹92,121
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹96,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹92,121 = ₹12,74,999
The working above rests on these assumptions:
- Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
- Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
- Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
- Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.
