If your offer letter says 7 LPA, the honest monthly figure is about ₹49,730, not ₹58,333. 7 LPA means a cost to company of ₹7,00,000 a year, or ₹58,333 a month, and around ₹8,603 of that never reaches you as cash each month. Below, I've worked through every rupee of the gap, line by line, so you can match it against your own payslip.

I have assumed a typical post-Labour-Code salary structure: half the CTC as basic pay, PF of 12% on basic from both you and the employer, a 4.81% gratuity provision, ₹200 a month of professional tax, and the FY 2026-27 new tax regime (Budget 2026 did not change the slabs). If your offer letter is different, the calculator in the sidebar lets you change these.

Full payslip breakdown of a 7 LPA CTC

Read this table from top to bottom. The first block is money your employer spends on you but keeps out of your salary; what remains is the gross pay printed on your payslip. The second block is what gets deducted from that gross before the ₹49,730 reaches your account.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (7 LPA)₹7,00,000₹58,333
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹42,000₹3,500
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹16,835₹1,403
Gross salary₹6,41,165₹53,430
of which Basic (50% of CTC)₹3,50,000₹29,167
of which HRA (40% of basic)₹1,40,000₹11,667
  of which Special allowance₹1,51,165₹12,597
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹42,000₹3,500
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹0₹0
In-hand salary₹5,96,765₹49,730

In plain terms, 85.3% of your CTC is spendable cash. Another 12.0% is saved for you in EPF (₹7,000 a month, earning 8.25%), and 2.4% is the gratuity provision you collect after five years with the employer. Only professional tax are true costs.

Income tax on 7 LPA: zero, and here is why

Tax is worked out on gross salary, not on CTC. Start with the gross of ₹6,41,165, take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction that every salaried person gets in the new regime, and you arrive at ₹5,66,165 of taxable income. That amount then runs through the FY 2026-27 slabs below.

Taxable income slabRateIncome in slabTax
₹0 – ₹4,00,0000%₹4,00,000₹0
₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%₹1,66,165₹8,308
Tax on slabs₹8,308
Less: Section 87A rebate− ₹8,308
Add: 4% health & education cess₹0
Income tax payable₹0
Zero tax, but only up to a point

Your taxable income of ₹5,66,165 is within the ₹12 lakh limit for the Section 87A rebate, so the slab tax of ₹8,308 is fully cancelled. You still have about ₹6,33,835 of headroom, so a raise that adds less than that to your taxable income keeps you at zero tax.

Which tax regime is better for 7 LPA?

You can still choose the old regime if it suits you, but it only makes sense if your deductions are large. Below, the new regime is set against two old-regime taxpayers: one who relies only on EPF for 80C, and one who invests the full ₹1.5 lakh and buys ₹25,000 of health cover. HRA is excluded since it depends entirely on your rent.

NewOld (PF only)Old (full 80C + 80D)
Standard deduction₹75,000₹50,000₹50,000
Other deductionsNonePT + PF ₹42,000PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D
Taxable income₹5,66,165₹5,46,765₹4,13,765
Income tax / year₹0₹22,727₹0
In-hand / month₹49,730₹47,837₹49,730

The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹0 more a year. With the new regime already at zero tax, there is nothing for the old regime to beat.

EMI and home-loan capacity at 7 LPA

Lenders look at your net monthly income, not your CTC. Most banks are comfortable when all your EMIs together stay within roughly 40% to 50% of take-home pay. On ₹49,730 a month, that means total EMIs of about ₹19,892 to ₹24,865.

As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹19,892 supports a home loan of about ₹22,92,191 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.

PF on full basic vs the ₹15,000 wage ceiling

The law requires PF only on the first ₹15,000 of monthly basic pay. With a basic of ₹29,167, your employer can choose to deduct 12% of the full amount or just ₹1,800. Ask HR which one applies, because it changes both your take-home and your savings:

12% of full basicCapped at ₹15,000
Employee PF / month₹3,500₹1,800
Income tax / year₹0₹0
In-hand / month₹49,730₹53,130
Total EPF saving / year₹84,000₹43,200

With the cap, your take-home rises by about ₹3,400 a month, but you put ₹40,800 a year less into EPF. If you take the cap, consider moving at least part of that extra cash into a SIP or PPF so your long-term saving doesn't quietly shrink.

Is 7 LPA a good package?

7 LPA is a solid salary for a fresher or someone with a couple of years of experience. Engineering graduates from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges, analysts, and many mid-size company roles start around this range. A take-home of ₹49,730 covers a comfortable single life in most cities, and the new regime keeps your tax at zero.

7 lakh per annum in monthly terms

LPA stands for lakh per annum, so 7 LPA is ₹7 lakh a year. Divided by 12, that is ₹58,333 a month of CTC, but only ₹49,730 a month actually lands in your account.

Per yearPer monthPer day (365)
CTC₹7,00,000₹58,333₹1,918
Gross salary₹6,41,165₹53,430₹1,757
In-hand salary₹5,96,765₹49,730₹1,635

Measured against working time, the in-hand pay is about ₹2,260 per working day (22 working days a month) or ₹283 an hour for an 8-hour day. That hourly figure is useful when you're weighing overtime, a side project or a freelance rate against your job.

8.5 LPA in-hand salary₹8,50,000₹60,430₹0

The formula, with your numbers

Basic = 50% × ₹7,00,000 = ₹3,50,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹42,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹16,835
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹6,41,165
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹5,66,165 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹42,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹0 = ₹5,96,765

The working above rests on these assumptions:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.

If your company uses a different basic percentage or caps PF, put your own numbers into the CTC to in-hand calculator, or use the quick calculator on this page.
