A ₹8,50,000 CTC leaves you about ₹7,25,158 a year in your bank account, which is 85.3% of the CTC. You pay no income tax under the new regime.

8.5 LPA means a cost to company of ₹8,50,000 a year, or ₹70,833 a month. That second number is the one most people quote, but it is not what your bank account sees. Your employer keeps part of the CTC for its own PF contribution and gratuity, and your own PF, professional tax and any income tax come out before salary is credited. On a standard structure, a 8.5 LPA package pays roughly ₹60,430 a month in hand in FY 2026-27.

The numbers use the structure most employers have moved to since the new Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025: basic pay at 50% of CTC, employer and employee PF at 12% of basic each, gratuity provision at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month and the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, whose slabs Budget 2026 left unchanged.

Full payslip breakdown of a 8.5 LPA CTC

Here is the 8.5 LPA package laid out the way it would appear if your HR team explained it line by line, with both yearly and monthly amounts so you can compare it directly with an offer letter or a payslip.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (8.5 LPA)₹8,50,000₹70,833
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹51,000₹4,250
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹20,443₹1,704
Gross salary₹7,78,558₹64,880
of which Basic (50% of CTC)₹4,25,000₹35,417
of which HRA (40% of basic)₹1,70,000₹14,167
  of which Special allowance₹1,83,558₹15,296
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹51,000₹4,250
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹0₹0
In-hand salary₹7,25,158₹60,430

Two lines deserve a second look. The ₹71,443 a year of employer PF and gratuity is part of your CTC but never shows up on a monthly payslip. And the ₹51,000 of employee PF is not lost: together with the employer's share, ₹1,02,000 a year goes into your EPF account, which currently earns 8.25% (the rate EPFO declared for FY 2025-26).

Income tax on 8.5 LPA: zero, and here is why

Tax is worked out on gross salary, not on CTC. Start with the gross of ₹7,78,558, take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction that every salaried person gets in the new regime, and you arrive at ₹7,03,558 of taxable income. That amount then runs through the FY 2026-27 slabs below.

Taxable income slabRateIncome in slabTax
₹0 – ₹4,00,0000%₹4,00,000₹0
₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%₹3,03,558₹15,178
Tax on slabs₹15,178
Less: Section 87A rebate− ₹15,178
Add: 4% health & education cess₹0
Income tax payable₹0
Zero tax, but only up to a point

Your taxable income of ₹7,03,558 is within the ₹12 lakh limit for the Section 87A rebate, so the slab tax of ₹15,178 is fully cancelled. You still have about ₹4,96,443 of headroom, so a raise that adds less than that to your taxable income keeps you at zero tax.

Which tax regime is better for 8.5 LPA?

Is the old regime ever better at 8.5 LPA? Here is a straight comparison using the same gross salary. The middle column is someone who claims only their own PF under 80C; the right column is someone who maxes out 80C and claims ₹25,000 for health insurance under 80D. Rent-based HRA exemption is not included.

NewOld (PF only)Old (full 80C + 80D)
Standard deduction₹75,000₹50,000₹50,000
Other deductionsNonePT + PF ₹51,000PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D
Taxable income₹7,03,558₹6,75,158₹5,51,158
Income tax / year₹0₹49,433₹23,641
In-hand / month₹60,430₹56,310₹58,460

The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹23,641 more a year. With the new regime already at zero tax, there is nothing for the old regime to beat.

PF on full basic vs the ₹15,000 wage ceiling

The law requires PF only on the first ₹15,000 of monthly basic pay. With a basic of ₹35,417, your employer can choose to deduct 12% of the full amount or just ₹1,800. Ask HR which one applies, because it changes both your take-home and your savings:

12% of full basicCapped at ₹15,000
Employee PF / month₹4,250₹1,800
Income tax / year₹0₹0
In-hand / month₹60,430₹65,330
Total EPF saving / year₹1,02,000₹43,200

With the cap, your take-home rises by about ₹4,900 a month, but you put ₹58,800 a year less into EPF. If you take the cap, consider moving at least part of that extra cash into a SIP or PPF so your long-term saving doesn't quietly shrink.

Is 8.5 LPA a good salary in India?

8.5 LPA puts you well above the typical salaried income in India. It is common for professionals with roughly three to eight years of experience, or for strong campus offers in tech and consulting. At ₹60,430 a month, you can run a household in a metro, save meaningfully and service a home loan, though big-city rents still take a large share.

Salary hike on 8.5 LPA: monthly impact

Planning your next appraisal or a job switch? This is what 10%, 20% and 30% more on a 8.5 LPA CTC would actually put in your account each month, after the extra PF and any extra tax:

8.5 lakh per annum in monthly terms

LPA stands for lakh per annum, so 8.5 LPA is ₹8.5 lakh a year. Divided by 12, that is ₹70,833 a month of CTC, but only ₹60,430 a month actually lands in your account.

Per yearPer monthPer day (365)
CTC₹8,50,000₹70,833₹2,329
Gross salary₹7,78,558₹64,880₹2,133
In-hand salary₹7,25,158₹60,430₹1,987

Measured against working time, the in-hand pay is about ₹2,747 per working day (22 working days a month) or ₹343 an hour for an 8-hour day. That hourly figure is useful when you're weighing overtime, a side project or a freelance rate against your job.

10 LPA in-hand salary₹10,00,000₹71,129₹0

The formula, with your numbers

Basic = 50% × ₹8,50,000 = ₹4,25,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹51,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹20,443
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹7,78,558
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹7,03,558 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹51,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹0 = ₹7,25,158

The working above rests on these assumptions:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.

If your company uses a different basic percentage or caps PF, put your own numbers into the CTC to in-hand calculator, or use the quick calculator on this page.
