1 LPA means a cost to company of ₹1,00,000 a year, or ₹8,333 a month. That second number is the one most people quote, but it is not what your bank account sees. Your employer keeps part of the CTC for its own PF contribution and gratuity, and your own PF, professional tax and any income tax come out before salary is credited. On a standard structure, a 1 LPA package pays roughly ₹6,837 a month in hand in FY 2026-27.
I have assumed a typical post-Labour-Code salary structure: half the CTC as basic pay, PF of 12% on basic from both you and the employer, a 4.81% gratuity provision, ₹200 a month of professional tax, and the FY 2026-27 new tax regime (Budget 2026 did not change the slabs). If your offer letter is different, the calculator in the sidebar lets you change these.
1 LPA salary breakup (monthly and yearly)
Read this table from top to bottom. The first block is money your employer spends on you but keeps out of your salary; what remains is the gross pay printed on your payslip. The second block is what gets deducted from that gross before the ₹6,837 reaches your account.
| Component | Yearly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| CTC (1 LPA) | ₹1,00,000 | ₹8,333 |
| Employer PF (12% of basic) | ₹6,000 | ₹500 |
| Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | ₹2,405 | ₹200 |
| Employer ESIC (3.25% of gross) | ₹2,883 | ₹240 |
| Gross salary | ₹88,712 | ₹7,393 |
| of which Basic (50% of CTC) | ₹50,000 | ₹4,167 |
| of which HRA (40% of basic) | ₹20,000 | ₹1,667 |
| of which Special allowance | ₹18,712 | ₹1,559 |
| Employee PF (12% of basic) | ₹6,000 | ₹500 |
| Employee ESIC (0.75% of gross) | ₹665 | ₹55 |
| Professional tax | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Income tax (new regime, incl. cess) | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| In-hand salary | ₹82,047 | ₹6,837 |
Of the gap between CTC and take-home, the largest piece is PF. You and your employer together put ₹12,000 a year into your EPF account, where it earns 8.25% (FY 2025-26 rate) and can be withdrawn tax-free after five years of service. The gratuity provision of ₹2,405 a year is paid out only if you stay at least five years, so treat it as a loyalty bonus rather than salary.
ESIC deduction at this salary
Because your gross pay is about ₹7,393 a month, which is under the ₹21,000 ceiling, you fall under the Employees' State Insurance scheme. You contribute 0.75% of gross (₹55 a month) and your employer adds 3.25% (₹240 a month) from within your CTC.
It is a deduction worth having: ESIC covers medical treatment for you and your family at ESI dispensaries and hospitals, cash benefits during certified sickness, and maternity benefit. Once your gross pay crosses ₹21,000 a month, ESIC stops at the end of the current contribution period and the deduction disappears from your payslip.
Do you need to file an ITR on 1 LPA?
Not compulsorily. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹13,712, below the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit, so the law does not require you to file. I would still file a nil return each year. It costs nothing on the income tax portal, it is the only way to get back any TDS deducted by mistake, and banks treat a few years of ITRs as proof of income when you apply for a loan or credit card.
Monthly budget on a 1 LPA salary
A simple way to plan a take-home of ₹6,837 is the 50-30-20 split. It is a starting point, not a rule: in a metro, rent alone can eat most of the 'needs' bucket, while in a smaller city you may save far more.
| Bucket | Share | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Needs (rent, groceries, bills, EMIs) | 50% | ₹3,419 |
| Wants (eating out, travel, shopping) | 30% | ₹2,051 |
| Savings and investments | 20% | ₹1,367 |
Keep in mind that you are already saving ₹1,000 a month through EPF before this budget even starts. Build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, about ₹20,512 to ₹41,023, before you lock money into long-term investments.
Is 1 LPA a good salary in India?
1 LPA is an entry-level package, common for freshers in BPO and customer support roles, retail, junior office jobs, and first jobs in smaller cities. On ₹6,837 a month you can live reasonably in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, especially if you share accommodation, but it is tight in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi NCR once rent is paid.
The more useful question is what comes next. The first two or three years are when hikes are largest in percentage terms, so certifications, a switch to a skill-heavy role, or a move to a larger employer can change the number quickly.
What a raise from 1 LPA really adds
A percentage hike on CTC does not translate one-to-one into your take-home, because PF grows with basic pay and tax can start or step up. Here is what common hikes would do to your monthly in-hand:
| Hike | New CTC | New in-hand / month | Change / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% hike | ₹1,10,000 | ₹7,521 | +₹684 |
| 20% hike | ₹1,20,000 | ₹8,205 | +₹1,367 |
| 30% hike | ₹1,30,000 | ₹8,888 | +₹2,051 |
When negotiating, compare offers on in-hand pay and on the fixed part of CTC. Variable pay, joining bonuses and ESOPs often sit inside the headline figure but are not guaranteed every month. You can try any number in the salary hike calculator.
How much loan can you get on 1 LPA?
Lenders look at your net monthly income, not your CTC. Most banks are comfortable when all your EMIs together stay within roughly 40% to 50% of take-home pay. On ₹6,837 a month, that means total EMIs of about ₹2,735 to ₹3,419.
As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹2,735 supports a home loan of about ₹3,15,143 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.

Use this to see how your take-home moves as the CTC changes. Each row links to its own full breakdown.
| Package | CTC | In-hand / month | Tax / year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 LPA (this page) | ₹1,00,000 | ₹6,837 | ₹0 |
| 2 LPA in-hand salary | ₹2,00,000 | ₹13,474 | ₹0 |
| 2.5 LPA in-hand salary | ₹2,50,000 | ₹16,893 | ₹0 |
| 2.6 LPA in-hand salary | ₹2,60,000 | ₹17,577 | ₹0 |
How this was calculated
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹6,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹2,405
Gross = (CTC − employer PF − gratuity) ÷ 1.0325 = ₹88,712 (ESIC applies)
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹13,712 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹6,000 − ESIC ₹665 − PT ₹0 − tax ₹0 = ₹82,047
The working above rests on these assumptions:
- Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
- Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
- Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
- Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.
If your company uses a different basic percentage or caps PF, put your own numbers into the CTC to in-hand calculator, or use the quick calculator on this page.
