If your offer letter says 2 LPA, the honest monthly figure is about ₹13,474, not ₹16,667. 2 LPA means a cost to company of ₹2,00,000 a year, or ₹16,667 a month, and around ₹3,192 of that never reaches you as cash each month. Below, I've worked through every rupee of the gap, line by line, so you can match it against your own payslip.

I have assumed a typical post-Labour-Code salary structure: half the CTC as basic pay, PF of 12% on basic from both you and the employer, a 4.81% gratuity provision, ₹200 a month of professional tax, and the FY 2026-27 new tax regime (Budget 2026 did not change the slabs). If your offer letter is different, the calculator in the sidebar lets you change these.

Full payslip breakdown of a 2 LPA CTC

The table follows the order your payroll team uses: first the employer's own costs come out of the CTC, which gives your gross salary, and then your deductions come out of the gross.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (2 LPA)₹2,00,000₹16,667
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹12,000₹1,000
Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic)₹4,810₹401
Employer ESIC (3.25% of gross)₹5,766₹481
Gross salary₹1,77,424₹14,785
of which Basic (50% of CTC)₹1,00,000₹8,333
of which HRA (40% of basic)₹40,000₹3,333
  of which Special allowance₹37,424₹3,119
Employee PF (12% of basic)₹12,000₹1,000
Employee ESIC (0.75% of gross)₹1,331₹111
Professional tax₹2,400₹200
Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹0₹0
In-hand salary₹1,61,693₹13,474

In plain terms, 80.8% of your CTC is spendable cash. Another 12.0% is saved for you in EPF (₹2,000 a month, earning 8.25%), and 2.4% is the gratuity provision you collect after five years with the employer. Only professional tax are true costs.

Why ESIC is deducted on 2 LPA

Because your gross pay is about ₹14,785 a month, which is under the ₹21,000 ceiling, you fall under the Employees' State Insurance scheme. You contribute 0.75% of gross (₹111 a month) and your employer adds 3.25% (₹481 a month) from within your CTC.

It is a deduction worth having: ESIC covers medical treatment for you and your family at ESI dispensaries and hospitals, cash benefits during certified sickness, and maternity benefit. Once your gross pay crosses ₹21,000 a month, ESIC stops at the end of the current contribution period and the deduction disappears from your payslip.

Is ITR filing mandatory at this income?

Not compulsorily. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹1,02,424, below the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit, so the law does not require you to file. I would still file a nil return each year. It costs nothing on the income tax portal, it is the only way to get back any TDS deducted by mistake, and banks treat a few years of ITRs as proof of income when you apply for a loan or credit card.

Is 2 LPA a good package?

2 LPA is an entry-level package, common for freshers in BPO and customer support roles, retail, junior office jobs, and first jobs in smaller cities. On ₹13,474 a month you can live reasonably in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, especially if you share accommodation, but it is tight in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi NCR once rent is paid.

The more useful question is what comes next. The first two or three years are when hikes are largest in percentage terms, so certifications, a switch to a skill-heavy role, or a move to a larger employer can change the number quickly.

How to split ₹13,474 a month

If this is your first salary, a rough plan helps more than a perfect one. The 50-30-20 rule splits ₹13,474 into essentials, lifestyle and savings. Adjust the shares to your city: rent in Mumbai or Bengaluru will push 'needs' well above half.

BucketSharePer month
Needs (rent, groceries, bills, EMIs)50%₹6,737
Wants (eating out, travel, shopping)30%₹4,042
Savings and investments20%₹2,695

Keep in mind that you are already saving ₹2,000 a month through EPF before this budget even starts. Build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, about ₹40,423 to ₹80,847, before you lock money into long-term investments.

Salary hike on 2 LPA: monthly impact

Planning your next appraisal or a job switch? This is what 10%, 20% and 30% more on a 2 LPA CTC would actually put in your account each month, after the extra PF and any extra tax:

HikeNew CTCNew in-hand / monthChange / month
10% hike₹2,20,000₹14,842+₹1,367
20% hike₹2,40,000₹16,209+₹2,735
30% hike₹2,60,000₹17,577+₹4,102

When negotiating, compare offers on in-hand pay and on the fixed part of CTC. Variable pay, joining bonuses and ESOPs often sit inside the headline figure but are not guaranteed every month. You can try any number in the salary hike calculator.

The formula, with your numbers

Basic = 50% × ₹2,00,000 = ₹1,00,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹12,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹4,810
Gross = (CTC − employer PF − gratuity) ÷ 1.0325 = ₹1,77,424 (ESIC applies)
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹1,02,424 → tax ₹0
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹12,000 − ESIC ₹1,331 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹0 = ₹1,61,693

Assumptions behind every number on this page:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.

If your company uses a different basic percentage or caps PF, put your own numbers into the CTC to in-hand calculator, or use the quick calculator on this page.
