20 LPA means a cost to company of ₹20,00,000 a year, or ₹1,66,667 a month. After the employer's PF and gratuity share, your own PF and professional tax and income tax, the take-home settles at about ₹1,29,339 per month for FY 2026-27. This page shows exactly how that number is built and what can push it up or down.

I have assumed a typical post-Labour-Code salary structure: half the CTC as basic pay, PF of 12% on basic from both you and the employer, a 4.81% gratuity provision, ₹200 a month of professional tax, and the FY 2026-27 new tax regime (Budget 2026 did not change the slabs). If your offer letter is different, the calculator in the sidebar lets you change these.

Full payslip breakdown of a 20 LPA CTC

Read this table from top to bottom. The first block is money your employer spends on you but keeps out of your salary; what remains is the gross pay printed on your payslip. The second block is what gets deducted from that gross before the ₹1,29,339 reaches your account.

ComponentYearlyMonthly
CTC (20 LPA)₹20,00,000₹1,66,667
Employer PF (12% of basic)₹1,20,000₹10,000

of which HRA (40% of basic)₹4,00,000₹33,333
  of which Special allowance₹4,31,900₹35,992

Income tax (new regime, incl. cess)₹1,57,435₹13,120
In-hand salary₹15,52,065₹1,29,339

Of the gap between CTC and take-home, the largest piece is PF. You and your employer together put ₹2,40,000 a year into your EPF account, where it earns 8.25% (FY 2025-26 rate) and can be withdrawn tax-free after five years of service. The gratuity provision of ₹48,100 a year is paid out only if you stay at least five years, so treat it as a loyalty bonus rather than salary.

Income tax on 20 LPA, slab by slab

Tax is worked out on gross salary, not on CTC. Start with the gross of ₹18,31,900, take off the ₹75,000 standard deduction that every salaried person gets in the new regime, and you arrive at ₹17,56,900 of taxable income. That amount then runs through the FY 2026-27 slabs below.

Taxable income slabRateIncome in slabTax
₹0 – ₹4,00,0000%₹4,00,000₹0
₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%₹4,00,000₹20,000
₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,00010%₹4,00,000₹40,000
₹12,00,000 – ₹16,00,00015%₹4,00,000₹60,000
₹16,00,000 – ₹20,00,00020%₹1,56,900₹31,380
Tax on slabs₹1,51,380
Add: 4% health & education cess₹6,055
Income tax payable₹1,57,435

That is an effective tax rate of 7.9% of your CTC, even though your top slab is 20%. Your employer deducts it as TDS spread evenly across the year, roughly ₹13,120 a month, and adjusts it in the last quarter once your investment proofs are in.

Which tax regime is better for 20 LPA?

The new regime is the default, and you have to opt out of it with your employer if you want the old one. The comparison below uses two old-regime cases: someone whose only investment is their EPF, and someone who fills the full 80C limit and pays ₹25,000 for health insurance. HRA exemption is left out because it depends on your rent and city.

NewOld (PF only)Old (full 80C + 80D)
Standard deduction₹75,000₹50,000₹50,000
Other deductionsNonePT + PF ₹1,20,000PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D
Taxable income₹17,56,900₹16,59,500₹16,04,500
Income tax / year₹1,57,435₹3,22,764₹3,05,604
In-hand / month₹1,29,339₹1,15,561₹1,16,991

The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹1,48,169 more a year. To make the old regime cheaper you would need about ₹6,49,901 of total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home-loan interest and so on, on top of the standard deduction and professional tax). That is realistic mainly if you pay high rent in a metro or are repaying a home loan.

The one deduction that still works for 20 LPA in the new regime

At 20 LPA, the most effective tax move left in the new regime is corporate NPS. Section 80CCD(2) lets your employer contribute up to 14% of your basic pay to NPS, and that amount is deducted from your taxable income. Restructuring ₹1,40,000 a year of your special allowance this way changes the numbers as follows:

Current structureWith 14% employer NPS
Income tax / year₹1,57,435₹1,05,596
In-hand / month₹1,29,339₹1,21,992
NPS contribution / year₹0₹1,40,000

Your monthly cash goes down by ₹7,347, but you save ₹51,839 of tax a year and build ₹1,40,000 of retirement savings. The trade-off is liquidity: NPS money stays locked until 60, with only partial withdrawals before that. Note also that employer contributions to PF, NPS and superannuation together are tax-free only up to ₹7.5 lakh a year.

EMI and home-loan capacity at 20 LPA

Lenders look at your net monthly income, not your CTC. Most banks are comfortable when all your EMIs together stay within roughly 40% to 50% of take-home pay. On ₹1,29,339 a month, that means total EMIs of about ₹51,736 to ₹64,669.

As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹51,736 supports a home loan of about ₹59,61,525 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.

Is 20 LPA a good salary in India?

20 LPA is a senior-professional salary in India, typical of experienced engineers, managers and specialists. With a take-home of ₹1,29,339 a month, the real lever is no longer getting more salary but keeping more of it: tax planning, employer NPS and disciplined investing make a bigger difference at this level than small salary bumps.

Do you need to file an ITR on 20 LPA?

Yes. Your salary income after the standard deduction is about ₹17,56,900, which is above the ₹4 lakh basic exemption limit of the new regime. Filing is compulsory once income crosses that limit, even though the 87A rebate brings your actual tax to zero. The due date for salaried individuals is normally 31 July.

Filing also builds an income record that banks ask for when you apply for a home loan, a credit card or a visa.

The formula, with your numbers

Basic = 50% × ₹20,00,000 = ₹10,00,000
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹1,20,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹48,100
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹18,31,900
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹17,56,900 → tax ₹1,57,435
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹1,20,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹1,57,435 = ₹15,52,065

What this calculation assumes:

  • Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
  • Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
  • Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
  • Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.
