22 LPA means a cost to company of ₹22,00,000 a year, or ₹1,83,333 a month. That second number is the one most people quote, but it is not what your bank account sees. Your employer keeps part of the CTC for its own PF contribution and gratuity, and your own PF, professional tax and any income tax come out before salary is credited. On a standard structure, a 22 LPA package pays roughly ₹1,40,429 a month in hand in FY 2026-27.
The numbers use the structure most employers have moved to since the new Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025: basic pay at 50% of CTC, employer and employee PF at 12% of basic each, gratuity provision at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month and the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, whose slabs Budget 2026 left unchanged.
22 LPA salary breakup (monthly and yearly)
Read this table from top to bottom. The first block is money your employer spends on you but keeps out of your salary; what remains is the gross pay printed on your payslip. The second block is what gets deducted from that gross before the ₹1,40,429 reaches your account.
| Component | Yearly | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| CTC (22 LPA) | ₹22,00,000 | ₹1,83,333 |
| Employer PF (12% of basic) | ₹1,32,000 | ₹11,000 |
| Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | ₹52,910 | ₹4,409 |
| Gross salary | ₹20,15,090 | ₹1,67,924 |
| of which Basic (50% of CTC) | ₹11,00,000 | ₹91,667 |
| of which HRA (40% of basic) | ₹4,40,000 | ₹36,667 |
| of which Special allowance | ₹4,75,090 | ₹39,591 |
| Employee PF (12% of basic) | ₹1,32,000 | ₹11,000 |
| Professional tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 |
| Income tax (new regime, incl. cess) | ₹1,95,539 | ₹16,295 |
| In-hand salary | ₹16,85,151 | ₹1,40,429 |
Of the gap between CTC and take-home, the largest piece is PF. You and your employer together put ₹2,64,000 a year into your EPF account, where it earns 8.25% (FY 2025-26 rate) and can be withdrawn tax-free after five years of service. The gratuity provision of ₹52,910 a year is paid out only if you stay at least five years, so treat it as a loyalty bonus rather than salary.
How much income tax is deducted on 22 LPA?
Under the new regime the only deduction a salaried person gets is the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Gross salary of ₹20,15,090 minus ₹75,000 gives a taxable income of ₹19,40,090. Employer PF and gratuity are not taxed, and professional tax is not deductible in the new regime.
| Taxable income slab | Rate | Income in slab | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹0 – ₹4,00,000 | 0% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹0 |
| ₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹20,000 |
| ₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹40,000 |
| ₹12,00,000 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% | ₹4,00,000 | ₹60,000 |
| ₹16,00,000 – ₹20,00,000 | 20% | ₹3,40,090 | ₹68,018 |
| Tax on slabs | ₹1,88,018 | ||
| Add: 4% health & education cess | ₹7,521 | ||
| Income tax payable | ₹1,95,539 |
That is an effective tax rate of 8.9% of your CTC, even though your top slab is 20%. Your employer deducts it as TDS spread evenly across the year, roughly ₹16,295 a month, and adjusts it in the last quarter once your investment proofs are in.
Old vs new tax regime at 22 LPA
The new regime is the default, and you have to opt out of it with your employer if you want the old one. The comparison below uses two old-regime cases: someone whose only investment is their EPF, and someone who fills the full 80C limit and pays ₹25,000 for health insurance. HRA exemption is left out because it depends on your rent and city.
| New | Old (PF only) | Old (full 80C + 80D) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard deduction | ₹75,000 | ₹50,000 | ₹50,000 |
| Other deductions | None | PT + PF ₹1,32,000 | PT + ₹1.5L 80C + ₹25k 80D |
| Taxable income | ₹19,40,090 | ₹18,30,690 | ₹17,87,690 |
| Income tax / year | ₹1,95,539 | ₹3,76,175 | ₹3,62,759 |
| In-hand / month | ₹1,40,429 | ₹1,25,376 | ₹1,26,494 |
The new regime wins here, and by a margin: even if you use the full ₹1.5 lakh of 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance, the old regime still costs ₹1,67,220 more a year. To make the old regime cheaper you would need about ₹7,10,962 of total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home-loan interest and so on, on top of the standard deduction and professional tax). That is realistic mainly if you pay high rent in a metro or are repaying a home loan.
Save tax with employer NPS (Section 80CCD(2))
The new regime removes almost every deduction, but one survives: your employer's contribution to NPS under Section 80CCD(2), up to 14% of basic pay. If your company offers it, you can ask HR to move part of your special allowance into NPS. At 14% of basic, that is ₹1,54,000 a year going into your retirement account instead of your salary.
| Current structure | With 14% employer NPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax / year | ₹1,95,539 | ₹1,31,475 |
| In-hand / month | ₹1,40,429 | ₹1,32,935 |
| NPS contribution / year | ₹0 | ₹1,54,000 |
Your monthly cash goes down by ₹7,495, but you save ₹64,064 of tax a year and build ₹1,54,000 of retirement savings. The trade-off is liquidity: NPS money stays locked until 60, with only partial withdrawals before that. Note also that employer contributions to PF, NPS and superannuation together are tax-free only up to ₹7.5 lakh a year.
How much loan can you get on 22 LPA?
When you apply for a loan, the bank will ask for your payslips, so it is the ₹1,40,429 take-home that counts. A common comfort zone is to keep all EMIs, including any car or personal loans, at 40% to 50% of that figure: about ₹56,172 to ₹70,215 a month.
As a rough illustration, an EMI of ₹56,172 supports a home loan of about ₹64,72,712 over 20 years at 8.5% interest. Your actual eligibility depends on your credit score, existing loans, employer category and the bank's own policy, so treat this as a ballpark, not an offer.
Is 22 LPA a good salary in India?
22 LPA is a senior-professional salary in India, typical of experienced engineers, managers and specialists. With a take-home of ₹1,40,429 a month, the real lever is no longer getting more salary but keeping more of it: tax planning, employer NPS and disciplined investing make a bigger difference at this level than small salary bumps.
Monthly budget on a 22 LPA salary
If this is your first salary, a rough plan helps more than a perfect one. The 50-30-20 rule splits ₹1,40,429 into essentials, lifestyle and savings. Adjust the shares to your city: rent in Mumbai or Bengaluru will push 'needs' well above half.
| Bucket | Share | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Needs (rent, groceries, bills, EMIs) | 50% | ₹70,215 |
| Wants (eating out, travel, shopping) | 30% | ₹42,129 |
| Savings and investments | 20% | ₹28,086 |
Keep in mind that you are already saving ₹22,000 a month through EPF before this budget even starts. Build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, about ₹4,21,288 to ₹8,42,576, before you lock money into long-term investments.

How this was calculated
Employer PF = 12% × basic = ₹1,32,000; Gratuity = 4.81% × basic = ₹52,910
Gross = CTC − employer PF − gratuity = ₹20,15,090
Taxable (new regime) = gross − ₹75,000 = ₹19,40,090 → tax ₹1,95,539
In-hand = gross − employee PF ₹1,32,000 − PT ₹2,400 − tax ₹1,95,539 = ₹16,85,151
What this calculation assumes:
- Basic pay at 50% of CTC, HRA at 40% of basic, the remainder as special allowance.
- Employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC; no insurance premium, meal card or variable pay is assumed.
- Professional tax is taken as ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). It varies by state: Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh do not levy it, and Karnataka exempts gross pay up to ₹25,000 a month.
- Tax uses FY 2026-27 new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh with marginal relief, surcharge where relevant and 4% cess.
